Go Green for Halloween

Even during Halloween, we can begin to curb our "use once and toss" habits with some simple, environmentally-friendly, money-saving adjustments.

Of course, we all know recycling is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce waste.  Recycling costumes amongst our children will not only save money, but cut down on excessive consumption of materials.  If you don't have any use for a spent Halloween costume, donate it to the Salvation Army or Good Will where it will be resold and reused.  With even a small effort like this, we can decrease the toxic byproducts and carbon being released into the atmosphere by manufacturing plants - a staggering side-effect of over consumption.

There are many painless adjustments we all can make during Halloween.  Using LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights instead of incandescent to trim you home is a major contribution to a brighter future.  Plus, you'll be amazed by the savings on your energy bill.  It's an easy way to do your part to lower the impact of your carbon footprint.  You can even recycle your old incandescent light strings for an added environmental bonus.

Another easy change harkens back to earlier Halloweens.  As a kid, Mom or Dad went with me as I gathered my treats.  I don't mean they followed behind me in a car, they literally walked from house to house with me and waited at the bottom of the steps while I knocked on the door and yelled "Trick or Treat".  Considering we lived in a "row house" and I could hit as many as 400 houses in a night, I'm sure it was a very long night for them...but they got some great exercise.  So, why not park the car and go with the kids as they trick or treat.  You'll save energy and money while you get some beneficial exercise.

Every kid needs something to hold their "treasures" on that spooky night.  And even though it's simple to grab a plastic or paper bag and send them on their way, stop for a moment and consider a more environmentally-active approach.  Reusable candy holders are a great way to cut down on waste.  With a selection of totes, cubes, sacks and bags available, you can make the little ones happy and help save the planet at the same time.

We've only touched upon some "Goin' Green for Halloween" ideas.  There are many more easy ways to save our environment and money at the same time.  Get creative...every little bit helps.
